Founded on December 30, 1980, the State University of Southwest Bahia (UESB) has been a cornerstone of higher education in the interior regions of Bahia and northern Minas Gerais for over four decades. As UESB celebrates its 44th anniversary in 2024, it is recognized as a leading institution in the North and Northeast of Brazil, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, alongside research, community outreach, and scientific production. The university’s commitment to quality education is reflected in its diverse range of programs and its substantial impact on regional, national, and international development across various fields.
UESB offers over 3,000 undergraduate spots annually across 47 programs at its campuses in Itapetinga, Jequié, and Vitória da Conquista. Admissions are conducted through the university’s entrance exams and the Federal Government’s Unified Selection System (Sisu), based on performance in the National High School Exam (Enem). Additionally, admission is available through reserved spots under the university’s affirmative action policy.
Each semester, UESB graduates hundreds of professionals, researchers, and educators. Its undergraduate programs span a variety of disciplines, including Humanities and Arts, Social Sciences, Business and Law, Sciences, Mathematics, Computing, Engineering, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, and Health and Social Well-Being.
In recent years, UESB has strengthened its focus on postgraduate education. The university now offers 24 master’s programs and 13 doctoral programs, in addition to various certificate programs.
UESB is also committed to innovation and research, implementing policies that support new ideas and foster international academic mobility. Its outreach programs have impacted over one million people, highlighting the university’s significant role in community engagement and education.
To support its academic community, UESB has been expanding its infrastructure. The university’s facilities now include over 70 academic sectors, 166 classrooms, and 218 laboratories, all equipped with modern amenities to promote effective teaching and learning.
The quality of UESB’s faculty and staff is a key factor in its high national ranking. The university consistently maintains a General Course Index (IGC) of 4, reflecting the excellence of its educational programs.
UESB’s mission is to advance knowledge through teaching, research, and community service, with a focus on contributing to regional and national development. Aligned with the guidelines of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), UESB is actively pursuing internationalization. Several of its postgraduate programs have received high CAPES ratings, reflecting their significant national and international engagement and progress toward full internationalization. These programs underscore UESB’s commitment to academic excellence, the recruitment of top-tier faculty, and the promotion of international collaboration. Programs rated 4 and 3 are also working toward higher ratings in future evaluations by enhancing their internationalization efforts and improving the quality of graduate education.
According to data from the International Office and the current Institutional Development Plan (UESB-PDI), UESB has established partnerships with 24 institutions across 12 countries, including Portugal, Spain, the United States, Angola, France, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Russia. These collaborations are either fully active or in the process of legal review and publication in the Official State Gazette of Bahia.
