The Postgraduate Program in Chemistry (PGQUI) at the State University of Southwest Bahia – UESB resulted from the initiative of a group of professors-researchers who came together to prepare and submit to Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) the project that gave rise to the Master Program in Chemistry, with a concentration in Analytical Chemistry. This course was recommended by the CAPES Scientific Technical Council on May 25, 2005, with a grade of 3 in the CAPES assessment. Immediately after accreditation, the Program started its activities and, after selection, the classes of the first students started on September 16, 2005. The Program emerged as a decentralization proposal for Postgraduate courses in Brazil, traditionally located in large urban centers, complying with the interiorization proposal of the Stricto Sensu postgraduate program. The first defense in the PGQUI took place on April 4, 2007. From the date of creation of the PGQUI (2005) until September 2021, 188 students obtained the title of Master in Chemistry, with a concentration in Analytical Chemistry. Thus, since its creation, this Program has effectively contributed to the development of teaching, research, extension and technology in its different areas of activity, with a strong insertion in the Southwest of Bahia.
In the 2007-2009 triennial evaluation by CAPES, the PGQUI increased the concept to 4. In the 2010-2012 evaluation, the PGQUI had concept 3. In the last evaluation, referring to the 2013-2016 quadrennium, the concept was 3. The next evaluation is planned for 2021, related to the 2017-2020 quadrennium.
