| Biotechnology (BT) | Current areas of biotechnology includes the production of biofuels, the discovery of molecules with technological potential, the development of vaccines, and the production of diagnostic tools, among others. Examples include: screening of organisms for the production of molecules with technological interest, such as hydrolytic enzymes (e.g., hemicellulases, xylanases, cellulases, amylases, proteases, enzymes involved in the degradation of sugars present in biomass), antioxidant compounds, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antitumor agents, biosurfactants, and others. |

| Functional Genomics (GF) | Studies on the regulation of gene expression in organisms under different conditions. Metagenomics: the study of the collective genome of a microbiota found in a specific habitat. This includes the construction of metagenomic libraries from mixed genomes, allowing the identification of genes from previously unknown organisms. |

| Cellular Mediators (MC) | Research on cellular signaling pathways that govern and coordinate cellular activities and functions under various conditions, such as cell division, growth, and differentiation; cell–cell and cell–extracellular matrix interactions; and communication between the cell surface, nucleus, and organelles. Studies of the mediators involved in these processes, such as neurotransmitters, hormones, nucleotides, etc. Search for compounds with different activities, such as antiparasitic, antimicrobial, anticancer, anticoagulant, etc. |
