OVERVIEW

The Graduate Program in Science Education and Teacher Training (PPGECFP), at the Master’s and Academic Doctorate levels, is part of the National Graduate System. PPGECFP was approved by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel/ (CAPES) in November 2010 and effectively began its academic activities in the first semester of 2011. During the 2013–2016 evaluation period, the Program received a Grade 4, awarded by CAPES’ Technical-Scientific Committee (CTC).

The Program is affiliated with the Department of Biological Sciences at the State University of Southwest Bahia (UESB), Jequié Campus, Bahia, Brazil. It was established with the purpose of fostering research in the field of Science and Mathematics Education, promoting the qualification of educators and researchers in the teaching of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Simultaneously, it aims to generate knowledge that contributes to the improvement of teaching and learning processes in this field, considering all levels of formal education as well as other contexts of non-formal education.

PPGECFP is structured to support the academic development of educators and researchers based on three fundamental commitments:

  1. i) Academic and scientific excellence and rigor;
  2. ii) The development of critical thinking oriented toward the challenges present in the educational field;
    iii) A comprehensive understanding of Brazilian educational issues, particularly in Science Education, encompassing both the formal education system, with special emphasis on public schools, and educational processes developed in non-school environments such as museums, parks, zoos, and media outlets.
