Short history of the NESP
The Population Health Studies Center/Group (Núcleo de Estudos em Saúde da População) of the State University of Southwest Bahia (UESB) or NESP in portuguese is a place of make the knowledge with enphase social determinants health/illness in specific population groups and life cycle (children, youngs, adults and the elders).
The NESP was conceived and created in 2020 by researchers of the pos-graduate program in collective health from Feira de Santana State University and researchers of the professors team of the UESB in the campus of Jequié city.
Our first meeting was recorded in the first semester of 2010. The NESP was registered in the CNPq database the same year (http://dgp.cnpq.br/dgp/espelhogrupo/0673457424460062 ).
Since the creation, the NESP added in a friendly way to the space and activities of the Center for Studies in Physical Activity in Health (NEAFIS). Therefore, in 2019 the reseachers the NESP and the NEAFIS decide to merge the proporsal and structure them, following as a single nucleus.
The NESP aggregate researchers in other universities (UESC, UFTM, UFBA, UEFS) and students in Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Odontology, Nursing, Medicine and Physical Education courses.
Scientific researh
In 2010, NESP researchers began developing studies that targeted teachers from state schools and people in the process of aging in small towns. In 2012, it starts a partnership with the Center for Epidemiology of the State University of Feira de Santana (NEPI|UEFS) to develop a multicenter project with primary health care workers.
In 2015, it developed a new study proposal that investigated the health risk behaviors of schoolchildren in Jequié.
In 2019, the center begins the development of a longitudinal study with health workers in the municipality of Jequié.
Universty extension
The first activities were associated with NESP’s research projects. Thus, we started these activities in 2010 and, in these, we promoted spaces for discussion and implementation of the demands revealed in research with studies carried out with teachers and with the monitoring of the elderly in small towns.

Teaching
NESP has been contributing to the training of students, teachers and researchers. To this end, the center develops preparatory courses for undergraduate students linked to the center. In these, the contents are aimed at the needs covered during their period of scientific initiation. The first courses took place in 2011 and are developed annually.
In 2017 we started new courses with the objective to disseminate and update knowledge on aspects related to stages of the development of scientific studies (planning, execution, collection and analysis). The target audience, in addition to undergraduate students, was expanded to researchers and stricto sensu graduate students.
Study groups
The study groups were created to congregate people interested in deepening content related to studies on physical activity and health (GEAFS); Health, environment and work (GESAT) and studies on social representations. The groups are organized by one or more coordinating researchers and have their own schedule of meetings.
