Scholarships

The Graduate Program in Ethnic Relations and Contemporaneity (PPGREC) regularly offers two sources of scholarships: the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and the Bahia State Research Support Foundation (FAPESB).

The number of scholarships and the period during which they are made available do not depend on PPGREC, but rather on the research funding agencies. The scholarship allocation selection process normally takes place in February, even before enrollment, due to the timelines established by the funding agencies. The Scholarship Committee is composed of two faculty members and one student representative.

The regulations governing the allocation of scholarships comply with CAPES Ordinance No. 133, dated July 10, 2023, as amended by CAPES Ordinance No. 187, dated September 28, 2023; FAPESB Resolution No. 001/2025; and UESB-Council for Teaching, Research and Extension (CONSEPE) Resolution No. 55/2023. The primary criterion for scholarship allocation is socioeconomic status, assessed based on the following documents:

  1. Declaration of absence of employment or professional affiliation, when applicable;
  2. Family income identification form for scholarship allocation analysis;
  3. Informal income declaration;
  4. Supporting documentation.

Applicants assume full responsibility under Article 299 of the Brazilian Penal Code, acknowledging that the submission of false statements, forged or altered documents constitutes the crime of ideological falsification. In addition, any inaccuracy in the information provided may result in the denial of the scholarship application, either prior to or during the term of the scholarship.

Under no circumstances shall a scholarship be granted to a student who engages in paid employment when, within the same Graduate Program and at the same level (Master’s or Doctoral), there is a student without a scholarship and without paid employment. The granting of a scholarship to a student who engages in paid employment shall be provisional and must be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee whenever new students are admitted to the Program, in order to comply with the guidance set forth in item I of this article. Accordingly, within the same Graduate Program, there shall not be a student receiving a scholarship while engaging in paid employment concurrently with another student who receives no scholarship and does not engage in paid employment (CONSEPE Resolution No. 55/2023, Article 2). In all cases, graduate scholarship recipients remain obligated to immediately inform the Program Coordination should they engage in any paid activity during the term of the scholarship (CONSEPE Resolution No. 55/2023, Article 5).

It is important to note that Master’s and Doctoral scholarship recipients must defend their dissertations or theses within 24 months and 48 months, respectively, with no possibility of extension, as established in the Program’s regulations.

Note:

  • Students receiving CAPES scholarships are not required to submit reports.
  • Students receiving FAPESB scholarships must submit a partial technical report after one year of scholarship receipt and a final technical report at the end of the second year of the program.
  • The Program does not require the submission of reports, as it understands this obligation to be the responsibility of the scholarship recipient. Any delay in submission results in the immediate suspension of scholarship payments.
